Gingerbread man workshop

Well I have to say this workshop (My 2nd workshop that consists of little kiddeos, the first would be the cupcake one from the previous "baking camp".) was rather.. Ill-prepared, well to me since I hadn't even finished clearing up from the last one, as in put the cupcake trays back into the cupboard type of clearing up!

Since this was my second time round I knew what to err.. Put in front of the kids? Fondant was a bit messy and too much instructions, apparently instructions and kids don't mix to well, heh, how could I have known?!
I used to LOVE instructions when I was err "their" age, maybe that's because I went to school and didn't know how to think for myself..

So ANYHOO (Still love that word, HAH!), preparing for the gingerbread man workshop wasn't as tedious as the fondant cupcake one since all I had to do was prepare the royal icing, both stiff and run-out consistency for outlining and flooding and LOADS of sprinkles!!
In case you were wondering the baking of the gingerbread man cookies were done by a homeschooling Dad, the cupcakes from the previous one were too!

Decided there weren't enough sprinkles so the entire day before the workshop me and Bloo, did quite alot of "plunging" with my tiny stars, flowers, hearts and circle plungers!
Whew, I never want to see those babies again! Something about me being a "Human machine" that I don't exactly enjoy, freehand is more mai thaang!

I am starting to think my oven is a little too small since it can only fit in like, 10 cookies at a time and it takes ages since each kid has about five cookies!

"Dear Santa,
Please upgrade my oven, make it twice as big and three times as chic!"

After my little swinging on my private hammock @ the deck break, I decided it was time to start icing them cookies since there was a horde of VERY eager little girls in my cake studio, looking at their cookies and going "Is it time to put the icing and sprinkles on yet?!".

Okay, I over exaggerated about the "horde" part, there were only three, I mean four little girls that were in my cake studio practically drooling so I had to save them from dehydration.
Since there was another batch of cookies still in the oven, I stared a private mini cookie "master class" with them and unknowingly the room started to fill up and soon I could barely move and the floor was COATED with royal icing, sprinkles and cookie crumbs!

Above: Me (Oh yes, paraded around with my rather wilty Laurel wreath the entire day! Whootwhoot!) and my "cookie master class"! Thanks for taking the photo Bloo!

So after not being able to stand the crowded-ness and the messiness I had to herd all the little lambs outside to the "Cookie-a-making" table and that's probably when the trouble started..

My hands, actually HAND (I should seriously consider being omnihanded, omnivores eat everything so omnihanded is err... Person who can use both hands! After some googling, actually a second of googling a person who can use both hands are called.. Ambidextrous. Hmf, what a long word, I am sticking to omnihanded, HAH!) was starting to get excruciatingly painful from all that outlining of cookies! And.. No one else was able to help since all their lines turned out broken and wiggly.. Oh well, if there's ever another cookie workshop for little kids who bake 5 cookies each I shall omit the outlining or perhaps invent an outlining machine to do the job!

Oh yes, another highlight of the day.. How on earth could I have forgotten this?! The kiddeos called me "Auntie teacher" (Or just plain teacher or... Just plain Auntie Karen...), I nearly fainted. Enough said.

I guess it was a pretty fun class overall, enjoyed it tons except for the part that my right hand was about to fall off and getting called "Wierd names"!

If only I weren't the "Aunty Karen teacher" but one of the participants! I mean... Look at the amount of sprinkles and the bags of colorful icing-a-flooding (And the amount of hyper-on-sugar kiddeos!)! What kind of human would you be if THESSSEEE don't make you happy?!

Lots of pink heart sprinkles,
Auntie Teacher Karen

Onyx Ophelia Moonbeam

I had a request for an interview for a Chinese (WHYWHYWHY?! Not English?!) newspaper, the one I mentioned on my previous post I think.
I didn't get her "Green Light" for the interview email until 2 days before the day they were coming to my house for it!
I had already planned to make a mock wedding-ish cake and some chic KCC styled cupcakes for it but since I didn't get the reply I didn't start preparing for them until 2 days before which was pretty RUSHY but I decided to do it anyway..

Pretty proud of myself this time round because I managed to make 3 full bloomed English roses + The royal icing FISHNET + A freehand gemstone + Play with my lace cutters that were rotting in a corner since the Diploma.. + Foliage, try out the 'billowing" (No, I did not misspell it!) that was trending on Cakecentral (Because they couldn't figure out how to do it! I don't really want to brag but I kinda did the the step-by-step how to make it in my head and got it in a minute! Anyone want a tutorial?) a couple of weeks ago and other cloth like techniques that I have ALWAYS wanted to do and all this in my favorite colors (Which not many people like because there is the awesome color BLACK in monochrome, crazy old fashioned people thinking black is bad when it is actually the color that makes every POP!), Monochrome + P!NK! Smiley face*

I am SUPER glad I managed to squeeze all this into 2 very full caking days and make it turn out perfecter than I want it to. Another smiley face?*

I guess you could say this cake was inspired by (Don't laugh! Mommy was the one that borrowed it!) The Revealing Story of Underwear (Young Reading Series 2 Gift Books) so this is pretty much like a dress-ish cake and I want to try billowing so this was the perfect cake to make!
It said in the book that some rebellious (I guess it is supposed to be a very "Hush hush" matter wearing underwear?) women during the Victorian age or something like that.. (I have a horrible memory I think.) Purpose made their underwear (This long white frilly pant.) show from the bottom (Can you spot the white lace underneath the black err... waterfall of gum paste?) of their dresses so therefore my Onyx is a rebellious cake!

As for the cake topper I made the same pink roses like I did for the Rosey Posey Cake.. Only I COMPLETELY forgot to curl the last few layers of petals back. By the time I realized it all the wired petals were already hardened! But I guess they still look alright!

After placing everything on the cake I thought the top tier (The one with the roses, DUH.) was pretty plain looking so I added some colorful hand painted (Getting quite addicted to painting on gum paste/fondant, it's super FUN!)  patchwork cutter butterflies to cheer it up!
I think it looks MUCH better and no so empty!
Have I ever mentioned that I absolutely HATE making the big butterfly because the wing are too big for it's body so it always septate/breaks?! Oh well... I used royal icing to piece it back as usual cause I can never make a PERFECT one! Soby sob soblah!

And of course I mixed a little Vampire-y Goth-y-ness into this cake, check out the black lace work and that ruby onyx gem stone, LOVIT!
I piped the "Fish net" (Tweaked the original design a bit, it has um.. stuff hanging down now? I wanted to pipe a tassel of some sort but it didn't really go very well so I just left it the way it was.)  at 7 in the morning when my eyes were barely open because I didn't want the humidity to collapse it if i piped it the day before!
I am glad it turned out pretty and even. Yet another smiley face*

Ooh! The cupcakes are out of the oven! Time to gooo... Can't wait for the interview! Stay tuned!

Fish net

I know, I know! It has been ages since I posted!
Well I actually have a half done Twitter bird origami tutorial I "filmed" (I mean "pictured" in PD.) but I got rather sick of posting the instructions since it was SUPER long AND no one commented on it so I am guessing you guys don't like origami, huh?

So anyways..

Like my fishnet (You know.. as in those tights/stocking thingies.) royal icing piping?!
I am working on a Polar Express train cake and the train is well.. On a icy mountain and the snow/ice is RI!
And.. I had extras!

Instead of dumping them away in the bin I decided to practice a bit of string work (Not sure if this is considered string work or not..) today and I have ALWAYS wanted to try out this technique (Nope, sadly it isn't an original Karen Cuppy Cake creation, it is a David Cakin' Crazy one! Man, I love the cakin" crazy team! They are pure awesomeness!) and it has been AGES since I last did so called "String work"!

The last string work and actually the first (I just realized!) string work cake was "India's Lace"!
The cake (Or master piece, starts laughing*) I made for the ICCA cake competition last year!
I am glad I didn't loose my RI piping touch!
I guess it is like riding a bicycle, you can never forgot it! (After you torture your hand piping with a #00 tip for 1000000000 hours on a cake I bet you won't forget!)

The fishnet is 13" long and it is piped with a #1 tip.

Over-piping

Yay yay yay! It is complete even though I wanted to dump it in the bin at the beginning because it look SO horrible!

Oops.. I am getting way to hyper! I am talking about my latest cake topper for my birthday cake!

I love the way it turn out SO much! It looks so.. so.. EYE CATCHING!
I was inspired by the broad way theater sign boards from some movie which I forgot the name... and of course GRAFFITI! I have always loved seeing graffiti, I think it is really really interesting type of art not vandalism... Maybe it is vandalism if you draw horrible graffiti but the good ones are really mind SCRABBLING!.. Err.. I mean BOGGLING!
I got the idea of 'Over Piping' from David Cakin' Crazy and his gang! I found the over-piping effect SUPAH cool! it takes piping to a whole new dimension!

It took me a good 1 hour or so from the start (Making the royal icing!) to the finish!
I think I went crazy mixing colors today! You have no idea how many times I had to wash that same 2 #2 tips and change piping bags!
Oh, I did not save the earth much today with all that disposable piping bags I used today!

Right right.. I forgot to speak about the part where I wanted to dump the thing in the bin!
I spilled YELLOW Wilton gel food coloring on the 'K'! !@#%*!
So... After stomping around my caking room for a good 5 minutes or so I decided it could be fixed since I was too lazy to roll out another piece of gum paste anyway...
I painted the 'K' yellow and the black base yellow too (Now it looks kinda brown-ish...) and since the rest of the letters were still white I went ahead to paint them random gel food colors I found in my tool box!
Above: The last time I did KCC's Graffiti!
I have loved writing and piping too (Since like.. 5 minutes ago!) in (Ehem!) Karen Cuppy Cake graffiti style ever since.. ever since.. Camp @ KKBC!
We got a challenge to write our name in the most creative (Oh! I love it when I get asked to use my creativity!) way you can think off!
So in a second my mind was going: COLORS, SWIRLS etc etc!
My 'name' turned out awesome and well I stuck to that way of writing ever since!

Super ice!

On wednesday I visited Mamamin's studio and bought a tub (2.5 KG) of 'Super ice' at RM 50.00..

Mamamin told me that it is instant RI (Roayl icing.).
No sifting or adding merengue powder needed!
I am really NOT sure how this 'Super ice' hardens because there is 0% merengue in the powder mixture!

The no sifting part gave me a SHOCK!
I was SO used to sifting my icing sugar/powdered sugar/confectioner's sugar at least 10 times for my string work/ extension work and such...!

It would save me TONS of time making RI if this REALLY worked that well!

I will be trying this 'Super ice' (It is made in Italy!) out today because I am running low on my stringwork stiff consistansy RI!

PLEASE work!

P.S i am done with tier #2! Hooray!

Royal icing Henna

I started henna-ing on my 2nd tier yesterday night...
I am pretty pleased with my henna.
I guess it is a GOOD first try!

But my Wilton #1 tip keeps getting stuck and it casues some swirls to look not THAT nice... Ugh!
I am getting sick of poking and cleaning the #1 tip!

My so very very expensive Wilton tilting turntable (That I bought for the Squire's kitchen diploma!) is coming in handy because of the piping :D

I am glad I have it!

I hope to finish the henna-ing by tonight or tomorrow morning so that I can start on the 3rd tier!

Before P.D 2

(Picture above: Our lovely beach .)
Papa is having lunch and I hope I am able to blog more HOPEFULLY!

We will be meeting my Poh poh, Koong koong and my cousin Caryn there, I cant wait!

Will blog about Port Dickson when I get back home :)

Oh and about the wedding cake...
The top 2 tiers are done :)
I experienced a couple of cracks in the royal icing so I had to redo but it was OK I suppose...
Now the top 2 tiers are wrapped in cling wrap and waiting for my to do string work on them!
I cant wait to get started on the string work!
But first i would have to ice the bottom 3 tiers... Ugh!
Am getting a bit sick of icing the cakes already ha ha!!
Really excited about the string work part...
It is going to be SO fun!!

OK Port Dickson here I cooooooome~!

Wedding cake competition prep

Took my very FIRST step towards my wedding cake just now.. :)

I decided on a around 90% royal iced cake.
So today I covered 2 out of my five tiered cake with royal icing...

While I was icing my 6 inch top tier I made a HUGE mistake!
HUGE as in everything I made before could go down the drain type of HUGE!!

(Sorry I am not telling you WHAT the mistake was because it is a secret... Hush! And how I am icing the cake... Hush-er!!)

So after I finished icing the cake I stopped and was thinking on what I could do with that ^*%!$#* cake!!
Was thinking for quite some time and I was just wondering about my color theme with is Black N white...
Then I got this SUPER DE DUPER idea for my cake! (Mwa ha ha ha ha!!)
Instead of just one color per tier I could make it 2 colors per tier!

WOOHOO!

I love GOOD things that come out of mistakes :D

Hooray for mistakes?

Tee hee!

~K

Goals for today...

Today hopefully after all the moving stuff into my new cakin' room (Which was the play/study room and maybe it 80% still is!) I would still have to to at least cover the 5 dummy cakes with royal icing and hopefully do some string work practice on my Wilton practice board... :)

And if if if if (Yeah thats ALOTTA if's) I have more time after that I will do my clay HOMEWORK -.-"

Hopefully i will be able to complete EVERYTHING!
